Cytochrome P450 sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) is a highly conserved enzyme belonging to the cytochrome P450 superfamily. It catalyzes the oxidative removal of the 14α-methyl group from sterol precursors in the sterol biosynthetic pathway, a crucial step in the production of sterols like ergosterol (in fungi), phytosterols (in plants), and cholesterol (in animals). CYP51 is a significant drug target for antifungal medications, particularly azoles, which inhibit the enzyme and disrupt fungal membrane integrity. It is one of the most widely distributed P450 enzymes.
