Cytokine and growth factor network

The cytokine and growth factor network is a complex, integrated system of signaling proteins that mediate communication between cells to regulate physiological processes such as immunity, hematopoiesis, and tissue repair (O'Shea et al., 2019). Rather than a single molecular target, this term describes a heterogeneous collection of ligands—including interleukins, interferons, and various growth factors like TGF-beta and VEGF—that operate with significant redundancy and pleiotropy (Leonard & Lin, 2000). In pathological states like chronic inflammation or malignancy, the balance of this network is often disrupted, leading to persistent disease signaling (Balkwill, 2004). Therapeutic strategies may involve broad-spectrum modulators, such as regenerative biologics or multi-target inhibitors, which aim to reset the network's equilibrium rather than inhibiting a single pathway (Gurtner et al., 2008). This classification is frequently used in drug development to describe the multi-factorial mechanism of action of cell-based therapies or complex biological extracts.
