Overview

Cytokine and hormone cognate receptors are a diverse group of proteins that serve as the primary docking sites for signaling molecules such as cytokines, growth factors, and hormones (Ibelgaufts, 2023). These receptors are essential for translating extracellular signals into specific cellular responses, including gene expression changes, metabolic shifts, and immune activation (Beato & Klug, 2000). They are categorized into several structural families, such as the cytokine receptor superfamily (e.g., IL-6R), receptor tyrosine kinases (e.g., Insulin receptor), and G protein-coupled receptors (e.g., Chemokine receptors) (Pierce et al., 2002). In clinical medicine, these receptors are major therapeutic targets; for instance, blocking cytokine receptors can treat chronic inflammation, while activating hormone receptors can address endocrine deficiencies (Kopf et al., 2010). Because of their widespread expression and potent biological effects, therapeutic modulation requires precise targeting to avoid systemic toxicity or broad immunosuppression (NIH, 2024).
