Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are a heterogeneous population of immune effector cells that display both T-cell and natural killer (NK) cell-like phenotypes. They are generated by ex vivo incubation of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) or cord blood mononuclear cells with specific cytokines, including interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), anti-CD3 antibody, recombinant human interleukin-1 (IL-1), and recombinant human interleukin-2 (IL-2). CIK cell therapy is being explored primarily in cancer immunotherapy due to their broad-spectrum antitumor activity and ease of expansion.
