Overview

Cytokine-mediated wound healing is a complex, highly regulated biological process essential for the restoration of tissue integrity following injury. This process involves a coordinated sequence of events—inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling—driven by a diverse array of signaling molecules including interleukins, interferons, and growth factors (StatPearls, 2023). These cytokines are primarily secreted by macrophages, neutrophils, and fibroblasts, acting in an autocrine or paracrine fashion to stimulate cell migration and extracellular matrix deposition (NCBI, 2022). In pathological states, such as diabetes or chronic venous insufficiency, the balance of these cytokines is disrupted, leading to persistent inflammation and failure of the wound to close (PubMed, 2021). Conversely, an overabundance of certain cytokines like TGF-beta can result in excessive collagen production and fibrosis (Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 2020). Therapeutic strategies often involve the application of recombinant growth factors, such as Becaplermin, to jumpstart the healing process in stagnant wounds (FDA, 2022). Understanding the temporal and spatial expression of these cytokines is crucial for developing targeted treatments that can modulate the healing environment effectively.
