It is not a single molecular target but rather a clinical and physiological objective achieved through the use of various immunomodulatory agents (Frontiers in Immunology, 2021). These agents may target specific cytokines like IL-6 or TNF-alpha, or broader signaling pathways such as the JAK-STAT pathway, to reduce hyperinflammation while maintaining necessary immune function (StatPearls, 2023). Achieving a normalized cytokine profile is critical in treating conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, sepsis, and severe viral infections such as COVID-19 (Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2018). Monitoring this process typically involves measuring systemic inflammatory markers and specific cytokine concentrations in the blood to ensure the immune system returns to homeostasis without becoming overly suppressed (PubMed, 2022). Successful normalization prevents tissue damage and organ failure associated with hypercytokinemia. Therapeutic strategies often involve a combination of cytokine antagonists and corticosteroids to achieve rapid stabilization. The timing of these interventions is crucial, as premature or excessive suppression can impair the host's ability to clear pathogens.
