Overview

Cytokine proteins are a diverse family of soluble signaling proteins secreted by many cell types, especially immune cells, and are key mediators of intercellular communication in both health and disease. They regulate immunity, inflammation, hematopoiesis, and other essential biological processes. Their dysregulation is involved in numerous pathological conditions, including autoimmune disorders, infections, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. While individual cytokines such as interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interferon gamma are important therapeutic targets, the term "cytokine protein" is too broad to designate a single actionable molecular target and encompasses many different entities with unique structures and functions.
