Overview

Cytokine response modulation refers to the regulation of the activity, production, and signaling of cytokines—small proteins critical for immune cell communication, inflammation, cell proliferation, and homeostasis. Modulation may involve targeting cytokine receptors (e.g., IL-6 receptor), intracellular signaling pathways (e.g., JAK/STAT, MAPK), and upstream neuronal circuits (such as the body–brain axis via the vagus nerve) to achieve therapeutic control over excessive or dysregulated immune responses seen in diseases such as autoimmunity, infection, and cancer. While drugs can be developed against specific cytokines and their receptors, "cytokine response modulation" itself is a therapeutic objective and not a distinct molecular entity.
