Overview

Cytokinins are a class of plant hormones (phytohormones) primarily responsible for promoting cell division (cytokinesis) and regulating various developmental processes, including shoot growth and leaf senescence (Wikipedia: Cytokinin). They are structurally related to adenine and are found in both plants and some bacteria. In human medicine, cytokinins are not considered standard therapeutic targets, and the term is frequently confused with "cytokines," which are signaling proteins in the human immune system. However, certain cytokinins like kinetin have gained attention for their potential anti-aging effects in skin care and their ability to modulate pre-mRNA splicing in rare genetic conditions like familial dysautonomia (PubMed: 22536058). While they exhibit biological activity in human cell cultures, such as anti-proliferative and antioxidant effects, they lack a defined canonical receptor in humans, and their therapeutic use remains largely investigational or cosmetic (PubChem: CID 4353).

Mechanism of action

In plants, cytokinins bind to membrane-bound histidine kinase receptors (e.g., AHK2, AHK3, CRE1), triggering a multi-step phosphorelay that activates response regulators in the nucleus (UniProt: Q9C5U1). In human cells, cytokinins like kinetin do not have a known specific receptor but are thought to act via antioxidant pathways or by modulating the splicing of specific genes, such as IKBKAP (PubMed: 15155836).
