Overview
Cytomegalovirus antigen IE1 (Immediate Early 1 protein) is a 72 kDa viral protein expressed immediately upon infection with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). It functions as a key regulator of both viral and cellular transcription, interacting with host chromatin and disrupting nuclear domain 10 (ND10) compartments. IE1 plays a critical role in immune evasion by inhibiting type I interferon-dependent signaling pathways and antagonizing intrinsic cellular defenses. It is a major target for CD8+ T cell responses and is used as an early marker for active CMV infection.
