Overview
Human cytomegalovirus glycoprotein B (gB) is a highly conserved, type I transmembrane glycoprotein found on the envelope of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). gB is essential for viral entry into host cells and mediates membrane fusion between the viral envelope and host cell membranes. It also plays a critical role in direct cell-to-cell spread of HCMV. As an essential mediator of viral entry/fusion, gB is considered an attractive target for antiviral drugs. Its immunogenicity makes it central to vaccine development efforts.
