Overview
The Cytomegalovirus Immediate-Early 2 (IE2) antigen is a multifunctional nuclear phosphoprotein encoded by the major immediate-early gene region of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). It is essential for lytic HCMV infection and plays a central role in regulating viral gene expression, replication, and immune evasion. IE2 acts as both an activator and repressor of transcription, ensuring timely expression of genes required for DNA replication. Its presence is used clinically as an indicator for active CMV infection or reactivation.
