Overview

Cytomegalovirus phosphoprotein pp65, encoded by the UL83 gene, is a major structural and immunodominant protein of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). It is located in the viral tegument and plays a critical role in immune evasion by inhibiting the host's antiviral interferon response through mechanisms like preventing IRF3 from entering the nucleus and inactivating cGAS. pp65 also contributes to the transactivation of viral immediate early genes. Its strong immunogenicity makes it a target for T cell responses and antibody detection, and it is widely used in research and diagnostics related to HCMV infection.
