The cytomegalovirus protein kinase, UL97, is a serine/threonine protein kinase encoded by the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) genome. It plays essential roles in viral replication and modulation of host cell processes during infection. It phosphorylates ganciclovir for activation, and also phosphorylates several key cellular proteins. Loss or inhibition results in defective secondary envelopment steps during virion assembly.
