Overview

Cytoplasmic endogenous regulator of oxidative phosphorylation 1 (CEROX1) is an unusually abundant, cytoplasmic long non-coding RNA conserved across placental mammals, characterized as the first lncRNA demonstrated to post-transcriptionally regulate mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Through competitive binding with microRNAs (notably miR-488-3p), CEROX1 modulates the abundance and enzymatic activity of mitochondrial complex I and IV subunits, thereby influencing cellular energy metabolism, reducing oxidative stress, and protecting cells against the toxicity of inhibitors like rotenone. Changes in CEROX1 levels have profound effects on mitochondrial function, with implications for diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage.

Post-transcriptional decoying of microRNAs (especially miR-488-3p), resulting in upregulation of complex I subunit transcripts. Increasing the abundance and activity of complex I and IV by modulating transcript and protein levels through miRNA competition.
