Cytoplasmic polyadenylation element-binding protein 4 (CPEB4) is a member of the CPEB family of RNA-binding proteins that regulate the cytoplasmic polyadenylation and subsequent translation of mRNAs through binding to specific cytoplasmic polyadenylation elements (CPE) in the 3' untranslated regions of target transcripts. CPEB4 contains two RNA recognition motifs and a zinc finger domain, enabling it to interact with select RNA sequences typically dependent on secondary RNA structure. CPEB4 is expressed in the cytoplasm and nucleus and is involved in key processes such as neuronal development and plasticity, cell differentiation, cell cycle control, and cellular stress responses including response to glucose deprivation and ischemia. Altered expression of CPEB4 has been linked to cancers (e.g., glioblastoma, hepatocellular carcinoma) and to chronic liver diseases where it can serve as a biomarker. CPEB4 does not currently have direct interacting drugs or established specific safety concerns as a therapeutic target based on available information.
