This broad class includes a wide array of functional molecules, ranging from metabolic enzymes involved in glycolysis to signaling kinases like those in the MAPK family and structural components of the cytoskeleton such as actin and tubulin (Human Protein Atlas). In drug discovery, individual cytoplasmic proteins are often preferred as therapeutic targets because they are generally more accessible for biochemical purification and assay compared to complex membrane-bound proteins (Frontiers in Microbiology). However, the term 'cytoplasmic protein' itself is a categorization based on subcellular localization rather than a single, distinct molecular entity. Modulating this group as a whole would be non-selective and disrupt nearly all fundamental cellular processes; therefore, pharmaceutical intervention focuses on specific individual proteins or pathways within this group that are dysregulated in diseases such as cancer, inflammatory disorders, or metabolic conditions (PubMed).
