Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte-Mediated Tumor Cell Killing (CTL-Mediated Tumor Cell Killing)

Target
CTL-Mediated Tumor Cell Killing
Molecular classification
Immune process, Cell killing mechanism
01

Overview

Cytotoxic T lymphocyte-mediated tumor cell killing is a critical immune process by which cytotoxic T cells (CTLs), primarily CD8+ T cells, recognize and destroy tumor cells. This involves antigen-specific recognition via MHC I/TCR interaction, followed by the release of cytotoxic granules containing perforin and granzymes, activation of death receptor pathways (FasL/TRAIL), and the secretion of cytokines like IFN-γ and TNF-α. This process is essential for anti-tumor immunity and forms the basis of many cancer immunotherapies.

Mechanism of action

CTLs recognize tumor-associated antigens presented on MHC I molecules via their TCRs and kill tumor cells through perforin/granzyme-mediated apoptosis, death receptor pathways (FasL/TRAIL), and cytokine release (IFN-γ, TNF-α).
