Overview

Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte protein 4 (CTLA-4), also known as CD152, is a cell surface receptor that plays a critical role in regulating immune responses. It is primarily expressed on activated T cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs). CTLA-4 functions as an inhibitory immune checkpoint, acting to dampen or "brake" the activation of the immune system to maintain self-tolerance and prevent autoimmunity. CTLA-4 binds with high affinity to B7 family ligands (CD80/B7-1 and CD86/B7-2) on antigen-presenting cells, outcompeting CD28 for binding and delivering inhibitory signals.
