D-alanine transpeptidase, also known as DD-transpeptidase or Penicillin-binding protein (PBP), is a bacterial enzyme crucial for the synthesis and maintenance of the cell wall. It catalyzes the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains, providing rigidity and structural integrity to bacterial cell walls. It is the target of beta-lactam antibiotics, which inhibit its activity and lead to bacterial death.
