D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase DacC is an enzyme found in bacteria such as Escherichia coli. It belongs to the family of low molecular weight penicillin-binding proteins (LMM PBPs) and plays a key role in bacterial cell wall synthesis by modifying peptidoglycan precursors. Specifically, it removes C-terminal D-alanyl residues from sugar-peptide cell wall precursors, which is essential for proper peptidoglycan maturation and remodeling. Its activity can influence susceptibility or resistance to β-lactam antibiotics.
β-lactam antibiotics covalently bind and inhibit the enzymatic activity of DacC, leading to defective cell wall synthesis.
