It is a pyridoxal phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme and plays a crucial role in bacterial metabolism, particularly in the synthesis of cell wall components such as D-alanine and D-glutamate. DAATs are potential targets for novel antibacterial agents due to their essential role in bacterial cell wall synthesis and absence in higher eukaryotes.
