Dac g 11 is a major pollen allergen derived from Dactylis glomerata, commonly known as orchard grass or cocksfoot grass. It belongs to the Ole e 1-like protein family, which is characterized by its role in pollen tube physiology and its high prevalence of IgE reactivity among grass-pollen-allergic individuals (UniProt, P84778). In the context of human health, Dac g 11 acts as a potent trigger for Type I hypersensitivity reactions, contributing significantly to seasonal allergic rhinitis and asthma (WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature). While not a traditional therapeutic target like an enzyme or receptor, it is a primary target for allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). In AIT, standardized extracts containing Dac g 11 are used to desensitize the immune system, promoting the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies and regulatory T cells to mitigate allergic symptoms upon natural exposure (PubMed, 15985011).
Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) involves the controlled administration of the allergen to induce immune tolerance, shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1/Treg-mediated regulatory profile, thereby reducing IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation.
