Overview

The damaged myocardial extracellular matrix is the altered three-dimensional network of proteins (primarily collagens, fibronectin, laminin, and proteoglycans) surrounding heart muscle cells that has been remodeled following injury such as myocardial infarction. This remodeling involves proteolytic degradation, inflammatory cell infiltration, fibroblast activation, and ultimately fibrosis and scar formation, which preserves structural integrity but impairs normal contractile function. Therapeutic strategies target this matrix to modulate healing, reduce scar burden, and restore cardiac function[1][2][3][4].
