Damp-Heat syndrome

Damp-Heat (Shi-Re) is a fundamental diagnostic pattern or syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) characterized by the co-existence of pathological dampness and heat, often associated with inflammatory and infectious processes (WHO International Standard Terminologies on Traditional Medicine, 2007). It is not a specific molecular target, receptor, or enzyme, but rather a systemic clinical state used to categorize various presentations such as jaundice, diarrhea, and skin eruptions (NIH NCCIH, 2023). In modern biomedical research, Damp-Heat is frequently correlated with systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and dysregulation of the gut microbiota (PubMed: PMID 31452654). Because it represents a complex physiological state involving multiple pathways, it lacks a single canonical molecular structure or classification (PubMed: PMID 28638456). Therapeutic strategies for Damp-Heat involve multi-herb formulas, such as Longdan Xiegan Tang, which aim to clear heat and drain dampness by modulating multiple biological networks simultaneously (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2020). Consequently, while it serves as a framework for treatment in TCM, it does not meet the criteria for a canonical therapeutic target in conventional drug discovery.
