Decarboxylase (DC)

Target
DC
Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

Decarboxylase enzymes catalyze the removal of carboxyl groups (CO₂H) from acidic substrates, releasing carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the process. These enzymes are essential in various metabolic pathways, including amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, and carbohydrate processing. Many decarboxylases require pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) or pyruvate as cofactors. Inhibitors like carbidopa (targets aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase) and DFMO (targets ornithine decarboxylase) are used therapeutically.
