Decarboxylases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the removal of a carboxyl group (CO₂) from a substrate. They play critical roles in various metabolic pathways, including amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter biosynthesis, and intermediary metabolism. Many require pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) as a cofactor. Deficiencies or dysregulation can lead to metabolic disorders or neurological diseases. Several drugs target specific decarboxylases for therapeutic purposes.
