Defensin beta 1 (DEFB1) is a human antimicrobial peptide constitutively expressed by epithelial cells. It is a member of the beta-defensin family, distinguished by its three intramolecular disulfide bonds formed by six cysteine residues. DEFB1 acts as a potent innate immune mediator with broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses, primarily by disrupting microbial membranes and by forming extracellular nets in its reduced state to physically trap pathogens. Additionally, it serves as a chemoattractant for immune cells via the CCR6 receptor and regulates epithelial barrier integrity. DEFB1 is implicated in the defense of mucosal surfaces, cancer biology, reproductive function, and inflammatory processes. Altered DEFB1 expression or function is associated with several diseases, including increased infection risk, cancer, and cystic fibrosis[1][3][4][5][7].
