Defensin beta 103B (DEFB103B) is a human gene from the defensin family, which encodes small cationic peptides with potent, broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Defensins, including DEFB103B, are produced mainly by epithelial cells and neutrophils and contribute critically to innate immunity by disrupting microbial membranes and modulating immune responses. DEFB103B (also known as Beta-defensin 3 or hBD-3) has a role in chemotaxis, epithelial barrier function, and regulation of cell death. It is implicated in host defense against infection, inflammatory diseases, and some cancer contexts. While there is interest in developing defensin-derived therapeutics, safety concerns include toxicity to host cells and the potential to exacerbate inflammation.
