Overview

Defensin beta 107B (DEFB107B) is a cationic, cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide mainly expressed in epithelial tissues and the reproductive tract, especially the epididymis. It is produced as part of the innate immune response, showing potent antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses via membrane disruption. DEFB107B, along with other beta-defensins, also functions as an endogenous chemoattractant, bridging innate and adaptive immunity through recruitment of dendritic cells, T cells, monocytes, and neutrophils. Its expression and function are inducible in response to infection and inflammation, and it may also help in sperm maturation and fertility. The peptide can mediate both pro- and anti-inflammatory effects, contributing to homeostasis or exacerbating tissue damage depending on its level and context. Defensin beta 107B is structurally similar to other beta-defensins, having three intramolecular disulfide bonds stabilizing a compact peptide structure. Therapeutic applications of targeting beta-defensins are under investigation but are complicated by potential cytotoxicity and dual roles in immune modulation.
