Overview

Defensin beta 113 (DEFB113) is a small, cationic, cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide of the beta-defensin family, coded by the DEFB113 gene in humans and other mammals[3][4]. Defensins are grouped into alpha-, beta-, and theta-defensins based on their structure and disulfide bonding pattern, with beta-defensins characterized by three specific disulfide bonds[1][3][4]. DEFB113 is part of the innate immune system and is primarily involved in antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses[1][3]. It functions by disrupting microbial membranes, contributing to the first line of host defense. DEFB113 is expressed in various tissues and is clustered with other beta-defensin genes within the genome[3][4]. There is currently no direct evidence of DEFB113 as a therapeutic target for existing drugs, nor specific disease-linked roles beyond general antimicrobial defense[3][4].
