Overview

Defensin beta 128 (DEFB128) is a member of the beta-defensin family, which are small, cationic antimicrobial peptides predominantly expressed in epithelial tissues[1][6][7][8]. Like other beta-defensins, DEFB128 is structurally characterized by six conserved cysteine residues forming three disulfide bonds, lending stability to its compact folded structure[1][7]. Beta-defensins are best known for their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses, acting by integrating into and disrupting microbial cell membranes[3]. In addition to direct microbial killing, beta-defensins, including DEFB128, play roles in immune modulation, such as promoting chemotaxis of immune cells and participating in mucosal barrier defenses[3][5][6][7]. While defensin beta 128 is not considered a direct therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter), it is implicated in host defense mechanisms and may be relevant to infectious and inflammatory diseases[7][8]. Specific drug interactions, therapeutic mechanisms, biomarker applications, or safety concerns for DEFB128 are not described in current literature.
