Defensin beta 130B is a small, cationic, amphipathic peptide belonging to the beta-defensin family, characterized by six invariant cysteine residues forming three disulfide bonds. The peptide is mainly expressed in immune cells and is predicted to play a role in cell chemotaxis, innate immune defense, and direct elimination of pathogens like bacteria and malarial parasites. Its antimicrobial activity relies on its net positive charge and structure, enabling interaction with negatively charged microbial membranes leading to permeabilization and cell death. In addition to antimicrobial roles, DEFB130B is involved in chemoattractant activity—interacting with CCR6 to guide leukocyte migration. While specific roles in human disease are not well documented, beta-defensins broadly are implicated in host defense, inflammation, and reproductive biology.
