Defensin beta 132 (DEFB132)

Target
DEFB132
Molecular classification
Defensin family (specifically beta-defensin), Secreted peptide
01

Overview

Defensin beta 132 (DEFB132) is a member of the beta-defensin family of small, cysteine-rich, cationic peptides involved in the innate immune response. This secreted protein exhibits antimicrobial activity, notably against Escherichia coli, and binds to spermatozoa, suggesting functions in reproductive tract defense and possibly in fertility. Beta-defensins generally disrupt microbial membranes and display diverse roles in host defense, immune modulation, and, for some family members, cell signaling. The DEFB132 gene is found in a cluster on chromosome 20p13. Like other beta-defensins, Defensin beta 132 is characterized by a stable, disulfide-rich structure, which contributes to its antimicrobial resilience and broad functional potential[1][2].
