Overview

Dehydrosqualene synthase (CrtM) is an enzyme found in *Staphylococcus aureus* that catalyzes the synthesis of dehydrosqualene, a precursor for staphyloxanthin. Staphyloxanthin is a carotenoid pigment contributing to bacterial virulence. CrtM is a target for antimicrobial drug development to combat *S. aureus* infections. It can also be used in metabolic engineering for the production of terpenoids.
