Overview

Delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH), also known as Type IV hypersensitivity, is a cell-mediated immune response that typically develops 24 to 72 hours after exposure to an antigen recognized as foreign by the immune system. It is primarily mediated by T cells (CD4+ and CD8+), macrophages, and cytokines, leading to inflammation and tissue damage at the site of antigen exposure. DTH plays a role in defense against intracellular pathogens but can also contribute to autoimmune diseases and allergic conditions.
