Deleted in azoospermia protein 2 (DAZ2)

Overview

Deleted in azoospermia protein 2 (DAZ2) is a member of the DAZ gene family located on the Y chromosome, specifically in the AZFc region. It encodes an RNA-binding protein critical for spermatogenesis and is expressed exclusively in premeiotic germ cells such as spermatogonia. DAZ2 is structurally characterized by containing RNA recognition motif (RRM) domains and DAZ-repeats, with variation in repeat number and sequence. Deletions of DAZ2—commonly occurring in tandem with DAZ1—are highly associated with impaired spermatogenesis, oligozoospermia, and azoospermia, particularly in specific populations. DAZ2 is not a therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme), but its deletion serves as a recognized biomarker for certain types of male infertility. There are no known drugs that directly target DAZ2, and it is not implicated in broader disease categories beyond male infertility related to its absence.
