DELLA proteins are a group of nuclear-localized transcription regulators in plants that are central repressors in the gibberellin (GA) hormone signaling pathway. They lack direct DNA-binding domains and regulate gene expression either through interaction with other transcription factors or by acting as coactivators/corepressors, impacting the expression of hundreds of genes associated with plant development and stress responses. The degradation of DELLA proteins, triggered by the binding of GA to its receptor (GID1), leads to their polyubiquitination by F-box proteins (such as SLY1 or GID2), resulting in release of their repressive effects and the activation of downstream growth processes. DELLA proteins are integral to the coordination of growth, response to environmental cues, and are key determinants of major agricultural traits in crops.
