Overview

Fatty acid desaturase 1 (FADS1), also known as delta-5 desaturase (D5D), is an enzyme encoded by the *FADS1* gene. It plays a critical role in lipid metabolism by introducing double bonds into fatty acyl chains, thereby regulating the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids. It is crucial for synthesizing long-chain PUFAs such as arachidonic acid (ARA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are vital components of cell membranes and serve as precursors for various bioactive lipid mediators. Altered expression or genetic polymorphisms in *FADS1* are associated with metabolic phenotypes and cancer.
