Fatty acid desaturase 1 (FADS1), also known as delta-5 desaturase (D5D), is an enzyme encoded by the *FADS1* gene. It plays a critical role in lipid metabolism by introducing double bonds into fatty acyl chains, thereby regulating the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids. It is crucial for synthesizing long-chain PUFAs such as arachidonic acid (ARA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are vital components of cell membranes and serve as precursors for various bioactive lipid mediators.
