Overview

Delta inulin is a specific, highly insoluble crystalline polymorphic form of inulin, a naturally occurring beta-D-(2-1) polyfructofuranosyl alpha-D-glucose (Cooper & Steele, 1988). Unlike other forms of inulin, the delta isoform possesses potent immunomodulatory properties and serves as the active component in the Advax vaccine adjuvant platform (Honda-Okubo et al., 2012). It functions primarily by enhancing both humoral and cellular immune responses to co-administered antigens without inducing the high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines typically associated with other adjuvants like aluminum salts (Petrovsky, 2020). Its mechanism of action involves the activation of the alternative complement pathway and the modulation of antigen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells, to promote a balanced Th1/Th2/Th17 response (Petrovsky, 2022). Delta inulin has been investigated in numerous clinical trials for vaccines against influenza, hepatitis B, and SARS-CoV-2, demonstrating a favorable safety profile and high tolerability (Vaxine Pty Ltd, 2024).
