Demineralized tooth enamel refers to tooth enamel that has lost mineral content, primarily calcium and phosphate ions, as a result of acid exposure—most commonly from bacterial metabolism of dietary carbohydrates, leading to dental caries (tooth decay)[1][2][5][7]. This process starts when the oral pH drops below a critical threshold (about 5.5), resulting in the dissolution of hydroxyapatite crystals that make up most of the enamel structure. Demineralization increases enamel porosity and reduces hardness, often appearing clinically as chalky white spots (early carious lesions), especially susceptible to further decay[1][5][6]. While not a true molecular or therapeutic target—rather a pathological change of tissue—demineralized enamel can be partially repaired through remineralization processes mediated by saliva, topical fluoride, and certain biomimetic agents[2][6]. Note: “Demineralized tooth enamel” is not a molecular entity (e.g., receptor, transporter, or enzyme); it is a pathological condition of tissue. It should not be considered a canonical therapeutic target but rather a state or lesion of the tissue[1][2][3][6][7].
