Target intelligence / Profile preview
Dendritic cell pattern-recognition and antigen-uptake machinery refers to a collective suite of cell-surface and intracellular receptors responsible for sensing pathogens and internalizing antigens. This machinery includes Toll-like receptors (TLRs), C-type lectin receptors (CLRs) like DC-SIGN and DEC-205, and scavenger receptors, which together orchestrate the transition from innate to adaptive immunity (Takeuchi & Akira, 2010; Figdor et al., 2002). By recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), these receptors trigger dendritic cell maturation and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (Banchereau & Steinman, 1998). Simultaneously, antigen-uptake receptors facilitate the endocytosis of foreign proteins for subsequent processing and MHC-mediated presentation to T cells (Steinman & Banchereau, 2007). Therapeutic strategies often target these pathways using adjuvants to boost vaccine-induced immunity or to overcome immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment (Coffman et al., 2010). Because it encompasses multiple distinct protein families, it is considered a functional system rather than a single drug target (Kawai & Akira, 2011).
