Overview

Dendritic cell activation is a central immunological process in which dendritic cells, upon encountering pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) or damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), become mature, upregulate antigen presentation machinery (including MHC molecules and co-stimulatory receptors), secrete cytokines, and migrate to lymphoid organs to prime T cells. This activation bridges innate and adaptive immunity, enabling robust, antigen-specific responses integral to defense against infections, cancer, and facilitating immune tolerance. Dysregulation of dendritic cell activation is implicated in diverse disease states from immunodeficiency and ineffective vaccination to autoimmunity and allergic or inflammatory disorders. Therapeutic modulation of dendritic cell activation is a target in cancer immunotherapy, vaccine development, and autoimmune disease management[1][3][6].
