Overview

Dendritic epidermal T cells (DETCs) are a specialized population of γδ T cells that reside exclusively in the murine epidermis. They express an invariant Vγ3Vδ1+ T-cell receptor and display dendritic morphology. DETCs play crucial roles in maintaining skin homeostasis, providing immune surveillance, promoting wound healing, and orchestrating early antimicrobial responses after skin injury by secreting cytokines such as interleukin‑17A and growth factors like insulin-like growth factor 1. While these cells are well-characterized in mice—where they constitute the majority (>90%) of epidermal resident lymphocytes—an exact human equivalent has not been identified. However, human skin contains both αβ and γδ intraepidermal lymphocytes with similar effector functions[5][8]. DETCs contribute to protection against infection, tumor formation, and autoimmune damage but can also mediate localized tissue injury under certain pathological conditions[2][5]. They are not considered classical therapeutic targets such as receptors or enzymes but represent an important immunological component for understanding cutaneous immunity. Note: "Epidermal T cell" is not a canonical molecular target or receptor but rather refers to a heterogeneous population of immune cells within the epidermis—including both αβ and γδ subsets—with "dendritic epidermal T cell" being the most specific term for this context[2][5].
