Dengue Virus Serotype 1 (DENV-1)

Dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) is one of four antigenically distinct serotypes of the dengue virus, a mosquito-borne pathogen belonging to the genus *Flavivirus*. DENV-1 is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. It is transmitted primarily by *Aedes* mosquitoes and can cause a spectrum of disease in humans ranging from mild febrile illness to severe hemorrhagic fever and shock syndrome. Entry into host cells involves initial binding to specific receptors like the 37/67-kDa high-affinity laminin receptor and heparan sulfate on the cell surface. DENV‑1 can be detected using molecular assays such as real-time RT-PCR. Infection with DENV-1 can result in asymptomatic infection or classic dengue fever. Distinct clinical features associated with DENV‑1 include a higher likelihood of red eyes compared to other serotypes. Sequential infections by different dengue virus serotypes increase the risk for more severe disease due to immune enhancement mechanisms.
