Overview

DENRP1 is a processed pseudogene (retrocopy) derived from the parental gene DENR (Density Regulated Re-initiation and Release Factor)[7]. Located on chromosome 8 (chr8:103428049-103430487), DENRP1 is found in the intragenic region of GARNL3 and represents a retrocopy with 38.7% overlap with its parental sequence[7]. As a processed pseudogene, DENRP1 was formed through retrotransposition of mRNA transcripts from the functional DENR gene, lacking introns and regulatory sequences typical of its parental gene[4]. Pseudogenes like DENRP1 can play important regulatory roles in cellular processes, particularly through mechanisms such as acting as microRNA decoys or competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs)[4][6]. These pseudogenes can regulate tumor suppressors and oncogenes by binding to and sequestering microRNAs, thereby modulating the expression of their parental genes or other genes sharing similar microRNA binding sites[3][4]. The DENRP1 pseudogene is present across multiple primate species including humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans, and various monkey species, but is absent in non-primate mammals, suggesting it arose during primate evolution[7]. While DENRP1 itself is not considered a direct therapeutic target, understanding pseudogene function is increasingly important in cancer biology and gene regulation research, as pseudogenes can influence disease processes through their regulatory effects on coding genes[2][4].
