Overview

Dental and periapical tissues refer to the internal and supporting structures of the teeth, including the dental pulp, dentin, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. In the context of endodontic therapy, these tissues are the site of action for bioactive materials such as calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs) (Source: PubMed, PMID: 29145909). These materials release calcium and silicate ions upon contact with interstitial fluids, leading to the precipitation of a chemically stable hydroxyapatite layer (Source: Journal of Endodontics). This layer serves as a biocompatible interface that promotes the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into odontoblasts or osteoblasts, facilitating the repair and regeneration of hard tissues (Source: StatPearls). The high pH resulting from ion release also provides significant antimicrobial properties, aiding in the resolution of periapical infections (Source: MDPI Materials). While not a single molecular receptor, the interaction involves various cellular pathways such as BMP and MAPK signaling to induce biomineralization.
