Overview

The dental biofilm matrix is a complex, heterogeneous extracellular structure produced by oral microorganisms during biofilm formation on tooth surfaces. It consists primarily of carbohydrates (notably glucans, fructans, dextrans synthesized by microbial enzymes from dietary sucrose), proteins (including DNA-binding and histone-like proteins), extracellular DNA, nucleic acids, and lipids[1][2][7][8][4]. The matrix maintains structural integrity and spatial organization, anchoring microbes to teeth and facilitating nutrient distribution and waste removal[3]. It protects bacteria from environmental and immune challenges, complicating their eradication and making biofilm-associated diseases such as caries and periodontitis difficult to treat[7][8]. Recent research considers disruption of the matrix itself or its synthesis as a strategy for oral disease prevention and biofilm control[1][7][8]. This entity is not a single molecule but a multimolecular structure central to dental biofilm pathogenicity.
