Dental hard tissues refer to the mineralized structures of the tooth, including enamel, dentin, and cementum. Enamel is the most highly mineralized tissue in the human body, composed of approximately 96% inorganic material (primarily hydroxyapatite), and serves as the outer protective barrier against mechanical wear and chemical erosion (StatPearls, 2023). Dentin lies beneath the enamel and cementum, forming the bulk of the tooth structure and containing microscopic tubules that communicate with the dental pulp (NIH, 2022). Cementum covers the root surface and provides a medium for the attachment of the periodontal ligament to the alveolar bone. These tissues are dynamic and undergo constant cycles of demineralization and remineralization influenced by oral pH and bacterial activity (PubMed, 2021). Pathological conditions like dental caries occur when acid-producing bacteria cause a net loss of mineral, while dentin hypersensitivity arises from the exposure of dentinal tubules. Therapeutic interventions, such as the application of fluoride, aim to stabilize these tissues by forming fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid dissolution than the original hydroxyapatite (CDC, 2020).
Promotion of remineralization through the formation of fluorapatite, inhibition of bacterial acid production, and physical occlusion of dentinal tubules to reduce fluid movement and sensitivity.
