Dental Nerve Fibers (None)

None
Molecular classification
Sensory Neuron, Nociceptor, Afferent Nerve Fiber, Trigeminal Nerve Branch
01

Overview

Dental nerve fibers are sensory and autonomic nerve fibers located within the dental pulp and dentin. They originate from branches of the trigeminal nerve and transmit sensory information, primarily pain, from the tooth to the central nervous system. The fibers are classified into Aδ, Aβ, and C types, each with different conduction velocities and responses to stimuli. They play a critical role in detecting mechanical, thermal, and chemical changes, enabling rapid responses to noxious stimuli and contributing to the perception of pain.

02

Mechanism of action

Local anesthetics block sodium channels, preventing nerve impulse propagation. Analgesics reduce pain signals through various mechanisms (e.g., COX inhibition for NSAIDs, opioid receptor activation for opioids). Corticosteroids reduce inflammation, indirectly affecting nerve sensitivity.
